What has the Town of Thompson done so far to facilitate the revitalization of Brownfields?

For more than a decade, the Town of Thompson has been working to promote the investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of key brownfield sites.  The Town’s Mill Sites Redevelopment Advisory Committee (“MSRAC”) are volunteers from the community who work with Town elected officials, staff and outside consultants toward this goal.  To date, MSRAC has:

  • Procured and administered more than $600,000 in State brownfield grants that have funded comprehensive environmental assessments of three key properties.
  • Encouraged private interest in Thompson’s brownfield sites, including the investment by River Mill Redevelopment, LLC, - a firm whose principals have successfully redeveloped similar historic mills in the south, and who plan to redevelop the River Mill and former Jim’s Hardware properties for mixed residential and commercial use.
  • Worked with other Thompson residents and committees, State agencies, NECCOG and the University of Connecticut to develop strategies to improve automobile and pedestrian infrastructure throughout the BAR Project area.
