FROM THE NEWSROOM: (THOMPSON) A Putnam-based manufacturing company is expanding with the purchase of a large and well-known facility in Thompson, all while bringing some jobs from over the Massachusetts border down here into Northeast Connecticut.

President of Nutmeg Container, Charlie Pious, tells WINY that his company recently bought the building and property located at 720 Thompson Road in Thompson, known for being the former Norampac and prior to that Johnson Corrugated facility.

“Our plans are to immediately move our warehouse – our warehouse is currently in Southbridge, (Massachusetts) – into that building,” Pious explained. “And we've outgrown our space for our wood division in this building in Putnam, so we're going to be moving our wood division there as well.”

Pious anticipates the wood division – which is responsible for manufacturing technical wooden crates and hardwood pallets – will be able to grow from its current 26 employees by about another 15 to 20 workers.

The 49-acre site in Thompson was purchased from Melrose Associates Limited Partnership for $1,350,000, according to the town clerk and land records.

The closing on the purchase was last week.
